Quinoa, which will reach up to 1.5 to 2 meters in height when in full bloom. Before that, it is very difficult to distinguish it from the lambsquarters found in our gardens.
Quinoa, a food crop, is one of the species cultivated for centuries in the Andes. This variety has large green panicles that turn red as the seeds mature in August/September. It has moderate water requirements and the ideal temperature during its growth is 12 to 20°C. It tolerates drought relatively well. The seeds are coated with saponin; rinse them thoroughly with water to remove their bitter taste.
Sow in March/April, on well-aerated, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.
Flowering occurs in July and the seeds are harvested in August/September, when the stems turn purple and the grains begin to detach from the flower heads. Cut the flower heads and let them dry before threshing them over a bucket.
Open-pollinated seeds harvested exclusively from the Pot'à'Jo garden, a 1500m² market garden combining horticulture and permaculture. Everything is cultivated there with deep respect for nature and its inhabitants. I have been cultivating my own seeds, from seed to seed, for years. -
