Ashwagandha, or Indian ginseng, is a woody perennial plant, growing to about 1 to 1.5 meters tall. It has entire, oval leaves, typical of the Solanaceae family. The yellow-green flowers are borne close to the stem. Flowering occurs between June and September. The fruits are berries, initially orange, then turning red when ripe, and are protected by a calyx.
Native to India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, it prefers warm exposures and does not tolerate frost.
Ashwagandha seeds are sown like tomatoes, in a warm place, at around 20°C, in late February/early March. Germination can be quite long and take a month or more.
Ashwagandha should be transplanted outdoors after the last frost, around May 15th. This plant prefers dry soil and a sunny location. In colder regions, it should be grown either as an annual or kept in a pot and brought indoors for the winter.
Open-pollinated seeds harvested exclusively from the Pot'à'Jo garden, a 1500m² market garden combining horticulture and permaculture. Everything is cultivated there with deep respect for nature and its inhabitants. I have been cultivating my own seeds, from seed to seed, for years. -
