Orach is a very beautiful old plant about 2 m high, cultivated since the Middle Ages for its leaves that are eaten like spinach. Also known as painted lady for its beauty in the garden. The young leaves are eaten raw in salads, cooked, they are prepared like spinach.
Orach is not very demanding; previously manured soil is sufficient for it, although rich soil, even with little sun, is even more conducive to its development.
Sow thinly in place in pockets from March to August, in sunny exposure, in fresh soil, kept moist but not excessively. Do not cover the seeds (about 1 mm). Thin out to 40 to 50 cm in all directions.
Rather than watering it abundantly during cultivation, spread mulch, even superficially, when the soil has warmed up (around June), to keep the soil cool. Don't forget to watch out for slugs that can concentrate underneath.
One month after sowing, the orach harvest can begin, just like spinach, by picking leaf by leaf as it develops.
Reproducible seeds harvested exclusively in the Pot'à'Jo garden, a horticultural and permaculture market garden of 1500m². Everything is cultivated there with deep respect for nature and their inhabitants. I have been growing my own seeds from seed to seed for years. -
