This chili pepper variety is distinguished by its hairy foliage, mauve flowers, and black-seeded fruits. Furthermore, the rocoto is a perennial plant that can tolerate temperatures as low as -5°C and can live up to 15 years. Its fruits are orange-yellow or red, measure 6-7 cm in length, have smooth, glossy skin, and thick, juicy flesh with a very strong flavor. They reach a Scoville rating of approximately 100,000.
It is often used fresh in the preparation of sauces. It is cultivated at altitudes of over 1,600 m in the Andes Mountains of South America, in Peru and Bolivia. It is often called locoto, manzano (apple pepper), peròn (pear pepper), or pepper tree.
Open-pollinated seeds harvested exclusively from the Pot'à'Jo garden, a 1500m² market garden combining horticulture and permaculture. Everything is cultivated there with deep respect for nature and its inhabitants. I have been cultivating my own seeds, from seed to seed, for years. -
