Canary Yellow Melon Seed (Cucumis melo) 10 seeds

The yellow melon known as "canary" of course takes its name from the eponymous bird, which sports a bright yellow color. Its characteristic elongated shape can be reminiscent of that of a rugby ball.

Contrary to what one might think, it is not a fruit but a vegetable, which is part of the large family of cucurbitaceae, in the same way as zucchini or pumpkin. It remains no less sweet and mild, and adapts perfectly to the use of a fruit.

The yellow melon has a white to light green flesh, very juicy and fresh. It is one of the favorite "fruits and vegetables" of the French. Its slightly perfumed and very thirst-quenching flesh can be enjoyed both plain and cooked. At the end of a meal as a fruit or as a starter in a salad or sliced, the yellow melon is always well appreciated.

Note that it is full of vitamins and minerals and that its flesh, rich in water, is low in calories.

    The perfect summer 'fruit'!

    Sowing melon in pots

Melons need a lot of heat (between 24 and 35°C) and light to germinate. The temperature during the day must therefore be within this range and not drop below 15°C at night. The ideal will therefore be to sow your melon seeds in a hotbed or heated greenhouse in March/April to replant them in the garden after the risk of frost has passed, i.e. in mid-May.
Sow 2 or 3 seeds (tip down) per pot filled with fine seed compost at a depth of 1 cm, water regularly to keep the compost moist (without being soggy) with a sprayer. Place next to a window or in full light. As soon as the seedlings have emerged the need for light is even greater, make sure to place them in a very sunny place.
Remove the weakest plants and keep only the most vigorous ones.

    Melon seedling in place

Another solution, more reserved for people living in the south of France or in a Mediterranean climate, is to sow directly in the open ground.
Space each future melon plant 80 cm to 1 m apart, place 2 to 3 seeds per pocket (at a depth of 1.5 cm) and cover with a mixture of sieved garden soil and mature compost. Protect the seedlings with a cloche or a frame at the start of cultivation. Only keep the best plant.

    Melon Planting

Depending on the region, you can plant young melon plants in the garden between April and mid-June. We recommend keeping a plastic tunnel at the beginning of the growing season to provide more heat. If you do not live in the south, we strongly recommend using a heated greenhouse for growing melons and watermelons. Make sure to keep a spacing of 80 cm to 1 m between each plant.
The melon will appreciate a warm place, a sunny exposure, a rich and deep soil rich in potash. Do not hesitate to loosen the soil a little before planting and add a little compost.

Reproducible seeds harvested exclusively in the Pot'à'Jo garden, a horticultural and permaculture market garden of 1500m². Everything is cultivated there with deep respect for nature and their inhabitants. I have been growing my own seeds from seed to seed for years.
