Origin of lemon balm

Lemon balm is an annual to semi-perennial aromatic plant with a lemony scent that is widespread in the wild in dry areas of the southern United States. It was imported to Europe in the 17th century, where it has adapted very well to Mediterranean regions. It is a plant of the Lamiaceae family that tends to lignify at its base and measures 40 to 60 cm. It is frequently found in flowerbeds for the color of its very spectacular and decorative pink-purple flowers, where it is very popular with bees. It is the famous 16th century Spanish botanist, Nicolas Monardes, who gave his name to this plant.

Harvest to flavor your cooking

Lemon Monarda has been consumed as a herbal tea for over 1000 years by Native American tribes. Simply harvest and dry it in the summer (leaves and flowers) to have some all winter long. Lemon Monarda is used to flavor salads and raw vegetables with finely chopped leaves, as well as fish, shellfish, white meats and cold cuts. It is also used as an aperitif with white wine.

Growing Lemon Monarda

Lemon monarda is an annual aromatic plant that adapts to almost all fresh and well-drained soils, even calcareous ones. It is sensitive to powdery mildew, but does not fear drought; plant it in a well-ventilated and sunny place. If your soil suits it, you will be surprised to see the seeds that fell from the previous year germinate.

Reproducible seeds harvested exclusively in the Pot'à'Jo garden, a horticultural and permaculture market garden of 1500m². Everything is cultivated there with deep respect for nature and their inhabitants. I have been growing my own seeds from seed to seed for years.
